The Secret to Getting Great Last-Minute Adventure Travel Deals
March 29th, 2009

Have you heard the one about how you can get great deals on airfare, hotel rooms or cruise vacations at the last minute?

Well not so fast.

It is true that many last minute travel bargains can be found on the web, but it is not as easy as waiting until the day before an important trip to try to make your reservations.

First the bad news: if you want to travel on or around an exact date, trying to book your travel a week or two before that date will almost certainly result in exorbitant fares rather than reduced costs. If you have a specific time you need to travel, due to a vacation, holiday, family gathering or a special event; you are far better off booking months in advance.

The key to getting great last-minute deals is flexibility. Flexibility in when you can travel and how long you can stay.

Let me give you an example. My parents are retired and, because my mother is disabled, they prefer to take their vacations on cruises.

Last year, they got an email alert from a cruise agency, announcing a seven day cruise of the Hawaiian Islands for about 20% of its usual rate. But – and if you call this a catch, here it is – they got the email on Saturday and the cruise was scheduled to depart on Tuesday.

Fortunately, they were flexible with their schedule and were able to be on that ship when it set sail four days later.

There are several points to be made about last minute travel deals from my parents’ story:

  1. First, cruiselines, airlines and hotels offer last minute deals when it is in their interests to do so. The cruiseline knew it had a number of empty cabins scheduled for the cruise that was about to depart. At this point in time, any cabin sold, no matter what the price, was additional revenue they were not going to have otherwise.

The same thing applies for hotels or airlines. An empty hotel room is a complete loss, and so is an empty airplane seat. So rather than accept a total loss, these companies will often offer travel values well below the going rate, just to bring in additional money.

But can you imagine what would have happened if my parents had called up the cruiseline asking for a reservation for that very same cruise just days before its scheduled departure date? Do you want to be they would not have received the same 20% price?

I think not. In all likelihood they would have paid morethan the normal rate just for booking so close to departure.

  2. The second point is that my parents had subscribed to travel alerts from the cruise agency. This way, the cruise agency, rather than my parents, initiated the contact.

There are several third party sites on the web where you can opt in to such last minute email alerts. Here are a few:

After you have checked out these third party sites, you should also check out the websites belonging to specific airlines. Many times the best travel deals are not communicated to the third party sites above, but can only be found from the airline itself. Here are a few examples:

Once you log onto any of these sites, look for the place to subscribe to email alerts of bargain fares. Sure your email inbox will receive a lot of messages you have no interest in, but occasionally you will get the exceptional bargain rate on a last minute vacation you will remember for the rest of your life.

  • De Plane Ride to Barbados
    March 29th, 2009

No self respecting West Indian traveling to the USA would ever leave home with anything other than an empty suitcase in order to return with luggage full of “Americana.” North Americans are frequently amazed at the amount of bulging bags Bajans bring to the ticket counters. But they must understand; in Barbados, we do not have the likes of WalMart, KMart, Target, or any of the other major retailers, so a trip to the North is always a shopping event.

The new 50lb weight limit per suitcase limit imposed by most major airlines has affected their purchases. But BWIA West Indies Airways (known colloquially as BEE-WEE or BWEE), who are very familiar with West Indian travelers – indeed, they are the only major airline based in the Caribbean – are flexible and allow up to 70lb per suitcase for an additional $25.00.

Sometimes the mundane and perfunctory travel routine is met with a memorable encounter. Such an encounter happened on our flight from Washington to Barbados on BWEE this week when we met Pearl Bhagan, a 36 year veteran in the airline industry. Pearl was working the first class cabin and quickly recognized us to be fellow foodies and kindred spirits when we requested an extra spicy Bloody Mary. With raised eyebrow and a devilish smile, Pearl delivered a SPICY beverage enhanced by her very own homemade pepper sauce which she nevers leaves home without! The resulting five mile high cocktail was bracing and delightful. Pearl then promised a gourmet dinner to follow (on an airplane?!?). Okay, I’m listening…

A tasty starter of plum tomatoes over bib lettuce salad was followed by roasted duck breast, new potatoes, and haricot verts (green beans to the culinarily challenged). Pearl expertly recommended that the duck be “sauced” with Cointreau and a splash of lime…with, of course, a dash of her delicious pepper sauce. When was the last time you heard anyone extol an in-flight meal? BWEE is by far the leader when it comes to airplane food, but this was good food anywhere. In fact, BWEE, is the only USA to Barbados airline that still serves a proper meal and not a boxed school lunch. And the service, well, thank you Pearl for making our flight so enjoyable and memorable.

As a working mother and wife in an extremely demanding job, Pearl depends on her housekeeper in Trinidad to cook most of the family meals. But then she had to find a solution to her husband’s preference for Pearl’s personal style of cooking. So she began to write down a compilation of her special cooking procedures and the necessary ingredients for her housekeeper to follow. As the pages started to grow in number, the result was “Kitchen Encounter” by Pearl Bhagan – an easy to follow cookbook for the working family.

From the USA, the main carriers to Barbados are US Airways, BWIA, American Airlines and Delta. We avoid American Airlines due both to the been-there-done-that attitude of the mainly senior flight attendants who work the route and the inconvenient flight schedules. USAIR has by far the best flight schedule to Barbados, connecting daily through Charlotte, NC. With USAIR, you will arrive in Barbados mid afternoon in time for a sun-downer (Bajan speak for a cocktail at sunset) and the departure leaves late afternoon giving you an extra day of fun in the sun. The flight crew is always top-notch although the food is little more than convenience store fare. Delta is still too new on the Barbados route so we’ll give them a pass until we can experience the airline personally. BWEE flys 3 times per week (Tuesday, Friday, Saturday) from Washington Dulles and daily from New York and Miami.

Both USAIR and BWEE offer frequent deals to and from Barbados – sometimes more than 60% off – through their web sites. And if you’re lucky enough to find a Pearl, you’ll be treated with true West Indian hospitality.

Billy O’Dell, with his wife Carolyn, is the owner of BarbadosBarbados.com, an online concierge to Barbados, and of Food Affairs, a popular Bajan catering service.

Do Not Worry, Get Driving Your RV
    March 28th, 2009

Over the summer my girlfriend and her step-daughter left Baltimore, Maryland and headed for Texas. After Texas they headed to California. From there it was on to Mount Rushmore and home. Well, you get it – she drove all over the country. In fact over 7,000 miles.

What she drove was a 31 foot Coachman RV. She did 99% of the driving; her step-daughter did do a little. But they did work like a team and watch each other when they had to park in the camp sites. We all know how tight some camp sites are, but with a little faness anybody can drive a large RV. Lori is only 5ft 2in tall and weights 110lbs. She has gotten really good driving the RV.

The reason I’m telling you all this is because when we are on the road we always have someone ask if she drives the RV. When they hear that she does the next question is always how well she does.

So we were wondering, what is the deal with driving the RV. For all those not used to driving an RV and think that it is hard to do, we want to share some tips. The trick about driving any size vehicle or towing is the way you set your vehicle up. What I mean by that is getting your head on straight and setting your mirrors properly because that is all you have to work with. Know that when you make a right hand turn you need more room than a car does. Therefore allow for it every time.

Most accidents are caused by not watching how much room you have. One thing you can do to practice how much room you have when you use your mirrors is to have some one drive down the road in the right hand lane and you practice moving to the right. They can use their lights if you do not have enough room to move over. This way you can learn without hurting anything.

You can also do this at night. Practicing at night is a very good thing. A school parking lot is a good place to practice backing up and turning or even parallel parking. Yes you can parallel park a motorhome. My girl had to parallel park the 31 foot RV at a restaurant where they had stopped to eat. You do not have to be afraid of driving a large RV or trailer or even a 5th wheel.

If you take the time to do a little practice, you will be fine. Plus your partner will appreciate this. It is always nice to have that extra driver or second pair of eyes. I have all the faith in the world in my girl when it is her turn to drive. We love to travel a lot and wanted to share a little bit of information on our experiences. I hope this article helps you. Maybe we will see you on the road some where.

    Happy RV’ing and Blue Skies

The author and his girlfriend are avid RV’ers who love traveling in their motorhome and seeing the beautiful sights all across the United States.
